Migraine headaches are the 7th leading cause of disability worldwide. While the most painful part of the headache itself may typically last 4-72 hours, it’s the before and after effects that are overshadowed and underestimated. The migraine has three distinct phases:

Pre-migraine symptoms can last up to 72 hours.

The migraine itself can last 4-72 hours.

The post-migraine or recovery period can last up to 24 hours.

That means the impact on sufferers can last for up to seven days in a single cycle. Keep a migraine journal or diary This helps you look at what is happening in your body so you can make adjustments in your diet and balance activities and stress. Besides, it comes in handy when you visit a doctor or specialist.

  1. What were your symptoms, like vomiting, nausea, sensitivity?
  2. When did they start? How long did they last?
  3. Where do you feel the pain? What does the pain feel like?
  4. What are your thoughts, negative or positive?
  5. What medications (over the counter or prescriptions) did you use and how effective were they?
  6. What treatments besides meds did you employ, like acupuncture, essential oils, cranial massage, or relaxation strategies of meditation, yoga, guided imagery? Did it help or make the headache worse?
  7. What foods or drinks did you have? Think back to before any symptoms started. The triggers could have begun sooner than you think, even the week before.
  8. Were there any changes in weather like humidity, storms, or temperature?
